PRP Now! Leo Xu // Steven Holl Architects
Tell us about your PRP firm. Where are you working?
I am completing my Professional Residency at Steven Holl Architects in New York City. The firm engages different scales of projects across the world, with a strong focus on institutional and civic projects that engage the public.
Do you enjoy the city you’re working in? Favorite aspects?
New York City has been an incredible experience so far. Beyond the excitement of unexpectedly encountering iconic landmarks, what stands out to me is how each corner of the city feels different with every encounter. I’ve come to appreciate how these places are layered with stories and history, often subtly connected. I really enjoy the ongoing process of becoming familiar with the city. Knowing that many others are also experiencing New York as newcomers, I’ve already developed a sense of belonging because there are many people just like me in this city. One note is that NY is COLD!
What is currently on your desk? What are you working on?
On my desk right now is a book on Charlotte Perriand’s furniture design, a roll of tracing paper with rough sketches, a small tower model, and a mix of everyday objects. I’m about to begin on a civic cultural project.
Describe the firm culture and office atmosphere.
The people from the office have been great. The firm has a strong collaborative culture. Teams are organized by project, and there is a strong sense of coordination across different phases of work. The office maintains a balance between being highly productive and comfortably relaxed. We would have pin ups with Steven often, and at times it feels similar to design studio, as discussions are highly design oriented. The office has people coming from different parts of the world, so sometimes I hear and learn a lot of interesting things about different places.
What is the first thing you'll tell your classmates upon your return to UT?
PRP has been an incredible opportunity and it was worth it. I’m very glad I chose to pursue it, as the experience has been meaningful and rewarding for me.
As you’re finishing up the week, what are your plans for this weekend?
This weekend, I’m planning to explore outside of Manhattan, possibly visiting another borough to experience different streets and food/music scenes.
