Sustainable Land Use Planning provides an overview of U.S. land use planning frameworks, institutions, processes, and tools. We focus on land use foundations: sustainability and related frameworks; the relationship of equity, justice, and racism to land use/land use planning in the U.S.; types and scales of land use-related plans; plan evaluation; sustainable community design and development; the relationship of public participation to land use planning; and land use plan- making processes and tools. We will also explore comparative case studies from other parts of the world when relevant to the class topic. Students will have the opportunity to apply some of the concepts learned to a final project. The class is organized into three parts: introduction; an examination of the comprehensive land use planning process and plans; and future directions for land use planning.
