Cascadia Chronicles

The required introductory urban design studio focuses on the landscape and morphology of cities in the Cascadia region of North America. The studio is designed to challenge urban design and landscape architecture students to consider the region's history of urban innovation alongside human entanglement with environmental systems at multiple scales. In Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland, critical milestones of North American city-making in the region are studied and critiqued. Over the semester, the course works toward a transdisciplinary collaboration model on the systems-scale design of new visions for an urban future. Students in the studio undertake a research trip to one of three cities in Cascadia each fall.
