UTSOA Assistant Professor and CM 2 researcher, Dr. Junfeng Jiao, is one of the leading Principal Investigators of the “Good Systems” Bridging Barriers theme. The goal of Good Systems is to provide a way for prosocial values to drive the design of artificial intelligence in autonomous and semi-autonomous technologies so that those systems can be used to both protect and improve individual wellbeing. Dr. Jiao will lead the smart cities research within the Good Systems, including a project to leverage detailed air quality data from Google self-driving cars in downtown Austin. Many health conditions are affected by air quality, and this project will use live data from Google to understand how pollution changes across time and space and then cross-reference that information with health data. The project will demonstrate ways to use detailed, crowdsourced air quality data for more accurate live monitoring and improved planning for public health.
