Shirley Li, MSCRP '15
Why did you choose The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture?
It is one of the best planning schools in the country.
Describe your current role and the work that you do.
I’m a Planner VI at the Transportation Planning and Programming Division in the Texas Department of Transportation. I oversee tasks under the Carbon Reduction Program and PROTECT program. My daily responsibilities include leading projects, managing consultants’ work, coordinating with other internal teams, as well as developing visions and tasks for these programs.
What’s something you’ve worked on recently?
Project evaluation for PROTECT and Carbon Reduction federal program funding.
How did UTSOA prepare you for your career?
UTSOA has provided me with the necessary knowledge and opportunities for professional experience in the real world. Another crucial aspect is the learning methodology I acquired during my years at UTSOA, which has enabled me to efficiently grasp new topics and areas as they arise.
What is an important lesson you learned here that has stayed with you?
Never be afraid of standing up for yourself and advocating your ideas.
What were some of the more memorable classes or experiences from your time at the school?
During my time at school, two classes stand out as particularly impactful and memorable: Transportation Studio and the TOD (Transit-Oriented Development) class, both taught by Dr. Ming Zhang. These courses provided me with experiences and insights that have continued to benefit me throughout the years.
In Transportation Studio, I had the opportunity to be part of a team working on a bike master plan for the city of Georgetown. This experience marked my first deep dive into real-world planning, where I was involved in a multifaced planning project. From conducting detailed existing condition analyses to actively engaging with the community and presenting our recommendations to the City Council, I gained invaluable insights. It wasn't just about learning the ropes of planning in the U.S. for an international student like me, but it also gave me a competitive edge in landing my first job.
The TOD class further expanded my horizons in transportation planning. Collaborating on a Transit-Oriented Development plan for the City of Leander, I applied the skills and knowledge I gained in Transportation Studio to a new context. Later, after I graduated, I re-connected with the City through my experience working with them as a student, which ultimately led to winning a project for my company there.
Looking back, these classes were more than just academic exercises. They gave me a tangible understanding of how urban planning directly impacts communities and opened doors for my career.
