Students participate in symposium on transit-oriented development in Seoul, South Korea
From August 2–12, thirteen students across Community and Regional Planning (CRP), Landscape Architecture, and Architecture programs participated in the International Joint Symposium & Workshop on Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) at the University of Seoul in South Korea. UTSOA students worked alongside nine students from three Korean universities, the University of Seoul (UoS), Inha University, and Gachon University for the workshop.
The event was co-organized by Community and Regional Planning Program Director Ming Zhang along with Professors Seungjae Lee (UoS) and Dr. Juhyeon Kwak (UoS).
The symposium featured 20 presentations and lectures by leading scholars and professionals in the fields related to transit-oriented development. In addition to attending the lectures, participating students formed four interdisciplinary, international teams to examine planning and design issues associated with the Great Train eXpress (GTX), a high-speed commuter rail system serving the Greater Seoul Metropolitan Area.
The mixed teams of UT Austin and Korean university students explored four topics:
- Comparative Analysis of Intermodal Transport Infrastructure and External Accessibility at GTX-A Stations
- Assessing Density, Diversity, and Design at Suseo and Seongnam Stations in Seoul, South Korea
- GTX-A Integration with Urban Functions: A Comparative Study of Transit-Oriented Development Preparedness along the Suseo–Dongtan Section
- Cooling the Commute: Green Infrastructure as a Heat Mitigation Strategy for Seoul’s GTX Network
The UT Austin student participants were Bodria Banu, Camila De La O, Brooke Frierson, Piper Gilley, Tabitha Guardiola, Aubrey Harlan, Lea Huber, Hyukjoon (Peter) Kwon, Jeremy McCampbell, Prasamsa Pokharel, James Potts, Cloe Schultz, and Harrison Wright.
