Larry Doll (1948–2018) established the European study abroad program at The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture in 1985. This volume documents a collection of sketches that he completed while traveling with the program in fall 2005, offering a sequence of images and associations that roughly follow the program’s itinerary. Doll’s discipline of drawing—of entering into a discourse with his drawings and allowing them to enter into a discourse among themselves—reveals a personal character trait of fortitude. The fundamental contradiction of the ink line that cannot be erased once committed to paper and the principle of uncertainty that Doll embraced at the outset of each drawing establish a matrix of creative tension that Doll skillfully balanced.
