Nate Albers // BIG
Tell us about your PRP firm. Where are you working?
I’m working at BIG in New York. The office is located in Dumbo and houses about 150 people, including six other interns. There are lots of project types—cultural buildings, masterplans, housing, landscape projects and more.
What is currently on your desk? What are you working on?
I am currently set up in the model shop, so I’ve got tweezers, glue, 3D prints, trees, sandpaper, concrete samples, etc. I’m working on a model for a large park project in the city that focuses on climate resiliency. Previously, I worked on an adaptive reuse project and a masterplan model.
Describe the firm culture? The office atmosphere?
I love the office atmosphere—people are often chatting at their desks and checking out other projects happening throughout the office. There are lots of lunch and learns, lectures, and themed office parties. People are hardworking and definitely put in the extra time if necessary to make projects successful and meet deadlines. On the whole, the office is very design-oriented and always working to come up with great concepts. Most of the work is in an early stage—there hasn’t been much detail work in my experience.
What is the first thing you'll tell your classmates upon your return to UT?
PRP is an awesome opportunity, it has been great to get a glimpse of life working at the type of firm I’m interested in and meet so many interesting people.
As you’re finishing up the week, what are your plans for this weekend?
On Friday, I’m going to play basketball with some other BIGsters, then explore Williamsburg the next day!
