Associate Professor Jason Sowell and National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow Kristine Stiphany, in partnership with Shundi Iwamizu Arquitectos Associados (SIAA), were awarded an honorable mention in the Sobradinho Social Housing Competition sponsored by the Federal District of Brasilia, Brazil. The competition featured 109 entries submitted from professional firms across Brazil.

The competition submission proposed sustainable strategies that integrate participatory processes with architecture, public space, and landscape for adapting to three different sites in Brasilia’s Sobradinho district. These strategies evolved from Sowell's research into landscape technologies and Stiphany’s ongoing research in São Paulo, Brazil, including a comparative post-occupancy analysis of social housing in large informal settlements.
