Xiomara Andrade // SOM

Tell us about your PRP firm. Where are you working?
I am working at SOM in Chicago, Illinois. As an architecture, engineering, and planning firm, SOM has produced many iconic and innovative projects all around the globe. The projects include a range of scales from libraries to even the tallest skyscrapers. With a SOM you can get a little bit of everything.
Do you enjoy the city you’re working in? Favorite aspects?
I have grown very fond of Chicago! This city is full of history and has so much to explore. With fireworks every week in the summer at the beach and lots of holiday events all fall and winter, the possibilities are truly endless. My favorite part is the diverse neighborhoods that are all accessible by train or bus.
What is currently on your desk? What are you working on?
Currently, on my desk, I have some plans that I have been helping develop for an airport project.
Describe the firm culture. The office atmosphere?
The atmosphere is focused but casual. With an open office layout, there are plenty of opportunities for having conversations with coworkers. Everyone is always happy to help out with any questions you may have and learn about projects others are working on. Every once in a while we will have town halls, lunch and learns, site visits, and other office-wide events.
What is the first thing you'll tell your classmates upon your return to UT?
I will first tell them how much I missed them! Then I would tell them we all have to move to Chicago and explore a new city together.
As you’re finishing up the week, what are your plans for this weekend?
This is my last work week in Chicago, so I will be enjoying all the winter holiday events I can before I move back to Texas. This weekend I will be going to the Nutcracker ballet show and seeing the Navy Pier Christmas drone show with my friends!
