Mark Macek

Lecturer

Mark Maček designs and builds furniture as Maček Furniture Company. Since 1995, the firm specializes in custom commissioned projects for houses, businesses, schools, and places of worship. Mark received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin and apprenticed with master craftsman Louis Fry.

Maček Furniture Company launched production lines at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), in 2005 and 2006. Mark has built furniture for Andersson Wise Architects, Larry Speck, Gensler, Michael Benedikt, Alterstudio, Miro Rivera, Pollen, Furman Keil, Paul Lamb, Dutch artist Maarten Baas, and the National Football League.

Mark is a member of the Guild of Austin Artisans, a local organization seeking a renaissance of architectural ornament and handcraft. He has participated in group design exhibitions at Cloud Tree Studios, Gallery Lombardi, Design Within Reach, and the Mebane Gallery. Mark manages the Splinter Group maker’s space in East Austin.

Mark teaches woodworking and furniture design at UTSOA. His forthcoming book The Eye of the Holder: A Brief History of Student Furniture is seeking a publisher. In 2013, the Texas Society of Architects presented Mark with the Artisan Honor Award in recognition of a career in craftsmanship and mentoring.
