Smilja Milovanovic-Bertram

Associate Professor

Smilja Milovanovic-Bertram is an Associate Professor of Architecture and founding Director of the Study in Italy program. She teaches beginning and advanced design studios, visual communications, and seminars in design methodologies and Italian cities.
Milovanovic-Bertram’s writing, research, and teaching focus on the conditions and effects of physical and metaphorical dislocation on spatial imagination. For her research she was awarded a Graham Foundation for Advanced Visual Studies grant for her exhibit, Lessons from Rome, addressing the influence of the American Academy in Rome experience for contemporary American architects. The exhibition was displayed at the American Academy and universities throughout the US and Italy. She is a Fellow of the MacDowell Colony, Peterborough, New Hampshire, and was both a Visiting Scholar and a Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome.
Milovanovic-Bertram is the recipient of numerous teaching awards including the Dads’ Association Centennial Teaching Fellowship, the Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award, two School of Architecture Outstanding Teacher Awards, and the Texas Excellence Teaching Award, Ex-Students Association. Related activities include contributor to the publication Travel, Space, Architecture, as well as authoring the Centerline publication, Rome Sojourn: Four Architects. She is completing her next publication, Roman Spaces: Conversations on the Eternal City and Contemporary Architecture, and recently co-authored Poetics and Pragmatics: A Studio Companion Guide with Joyce Rosner.
