Dean Michelle Addington was awarded the 2023 James Haeker Award for Distinguished Leadership in Architectural Research by the Architectural Research Centers Consortium's (ARCC) Board of Directors. Named in honor of ARCC’s founding Executive Secretary, the prestigious award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the growth of research in architecture and related fields, including urban and regional planning, landscape architecture, and interior design.

To be considered, recipients must have a record of sustained and significant research leadership at the national and international levels. As an expert in sustainability, Addington was recognized for the high impact of her research into energy conversion systems and behaviors, advanced materials, and new technologies.

Addington has served as dean of The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture since 2017. At the end of the 2022-23 academic year, she will conclude her tenure to focus her efforts, full-time, on climate-related issues. Before coming to UT Austin, Addington served as the Gerald Hines Chair in Sustainable Architectural Design at the Yale University School of Architecture and was jointly appointed as a Professor at the Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.

Originally educated as a mechanical/nuclear engineer, she worked for several years as an engineer at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center and for E.I. DuPont de Nemours before she studied architecture. Her teaching, research, and professional work span across these disciplines with the overarching objective of determining strategic interactions between physical phenomena and spatial, geo-political, economic, and cultural systems.

ARCC will officially recognize Addington during an awards ceremony at the organization’s 2023 international conference in Dallas, Texas in April. As part of ARCC’s 2021 conference, Addington gave a keynote address titled “Research Redux,” which you can watch here.
