In this studio, students were challenged to delve into the cinematic universe and extract architectural and design insights. This project explores "Blade Runner 2049," a film that masterfully intertwines futuristic aesthetics with profound thematic depth. The movie's use of scale, light placement, and the interaction between light and water, particularly through caustic effects, became central elements in this design concept for the Cambridge Tower Hotel in Austin, transforming the space into a realm that is both brutalist and hospitable, futuristic yet deeply human.
Arrival: A Monumental First Impression
The design journey begins with the arrival experience, characterized by a monumental artificial skylight and a shallow pool beneath it. This setup not only enhances the natural light but also manipulates it to create mesmerizing water caustics that dance on the surfaces, embedding a lasting visual memory for guests. This interplay of light and shadow introduces a sense of mystery and beauty, crafting an enchanting atmosphere right from the first encounter.
Pathway: Serial Framing and Holographic Interactions
The pathways within the hotel employ a strategic use of light to create 'serial framing'—a technique where similar frames repeat to guide the guest’s journey. Additionally, the inclusion of interactive holograms along these paths enhances guest interaction, providing a dynamic and immersive experience reminiscent of the film’s own narrative depth.
Stay: Introspective Spaces
In private spaces, the design focuses on introspection and tranquility. The headboards, crafted from travertine, are backlit with narrow, linear lights, promoting a contemplative atmosphere. This design choice encourages guests to pause and reflect, paralleling the movie’s introspective tone.
Play: Sculptural Light and Water Interactions
Drawing inspiration from the "throne island" scene in Blade Runner 2049, the hotel’s outdoor spaces are designed around a monumental sculpture that acts both as a gateway and a central showpiece. This area, characterized by minimal furnishings and strategic lighting, emphasizes the powerful interplay of light and water, creating a communal space that invites guests to gather, interact, and celebrate life.
Integration of Futuristic Elements
The design incorporates innovative features that enhance the futuristic vibe of the hotel. Floating flowers, seen in the renders, interact with guests in various ways, such as providing tours or entertainment, symbolizing how future technologies might integrate more seamlessly into our social spaces. Additionally, the hotel features advanced holographic TVs and various types of projections, which not only serve entertainment purposes but also blend seamlessly with architectural aesthetics, further emphasizing the futuristic theme.
