The Material’s Lab continued the ‘Materializing Design’ series with a virtual presentation from Coleman Coker. Coleman Coker is a Professor of Practice at the School of Architecture and the director of the Gulf Coast DesignLab.
Operating a studio in the mountains, far off the next city, can be challenging. Specially setting it up as a young couple with big dreams, but no clients. Now, 4 years and one pandemic later, we can reflect on those dreams, those challenges, failures and benefits. And we can wonder what opportunities lay ahead for a new generation of architects.

Please join School of Architecture faculty and friends to celebrate the multitude of publications they have produced since March 2020. The SOA Book Fair will include 22 titles, including five volumes produced by CAAD and from notable publishers such as Penguin Random House, Rizzoli, and UT Press. Authors will be present to sign copies and discuss their respective books, with all publications available for purchase. CAAD damaged book backstock will also be available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis.

When a derelict early 18th Century townhouse in Central London was given to an obscure Swiss charity, Assemble was invited to come up with an idea of what to do with it. The house had belonged to the artist, cyberneticist, beekeeper, campaigner and polymath Annetta Pedretti, whose energetic spirit we seek to maintain in the house, whilst creating a space for grassroots resistance to decades of top-down redevelopment projects. In this talk Louis will discuss the ideas behind the project and the amazing woman that lived and died in the house.

The Materials Lab continued the ‘Materializing Design’ series with an introduction to the Materials Exchange. Located in the Sutton basement, the Materials Exchange has a variety of materials available for students to use for physical modeling. The Materials Lab staff led a hands-on demonstration highlighting basic model building methods using different tools and techniques. Students were able to learn about the physical and representational qualities that different material selections have to offer.

The Materials Lab hosted Melodie Yashar, Director of Building Design & Performance at ICON, for a virtual Lunch n’ Learn presentation. Her department focuses on foundational research development related to ICON’s wall system as well as the overall building performance of ICON homes. ICON is an Austin-based construction technologies company pioneering the future of 3D-printed housing for Earth and beyond.
