Project 1 – Cardboard Box
For this assignment, students were tasked with designing a cardboard box enclosure for a particular item of their choosing. This enclosure, "Catnip Cabaret," was created for a wooden marionette puppet of a cat, designed to be transformed into a miniature theater. With sustainability and functionality in mind, intricate props were built into the cardboard panels that could then be removed and used on the theater stage. Assembling the cardboard box is made easier as it can be folded out of a single cardboard piece and only one instance of adhesive was required.
Project 2 – Ice Merchants
The Ice Merchants project involved redesigning the precarious residence on the side of an icy cliff face for a father and son. This design emphasizes the duo’s daily routine and procession through the exaggeration of two platforms extended far from the cliff’s face. The residence is embedded into the mountain to give the family additional feelings of security and to house their ice making production at the coldest point. The residence is composed of two wings, one to house the father’s chambers and shared living and eating spaces, and the other for the son which allows for additional privacy. Between the residential wings is a courtyard exposed to the elements and bridges the gap between the father and son.
Project 3 – Freighter Ship
The final studio project was to redesign the command bridge of a freighter shipping vessel. My design is defined by a long path of circulation that takes crew members from the bottom deck up through several enclosed and communal spaces, such as the mess hall and gym, before reaching a top building that houses the wheelhouse/chartroom and captain/officer offices. The intention is for crew members to allow for the discovery of unique vantage points and sightlines out to the endless ocean while also fostering dynamic movement and interaction between the crew and passengers.
