This project, inspired by landscape architect Peter Lantz's concept of memory within the park, seeks to provide visitors with a diverse range of experiences and memories. It creates a dynamic environment in which each visitor can form unique memories by incorporating elements from the park's history, such as factory sections, silhouettes, and circulation paths, which have inspired new forms and been reworked into something new for the modern day.
Characters representing various programs and factory sections were created to assist with the design process. Using the scale and layout of the original factory sections, we reconstructed and refitted these interior spaces to accommodate modern-day programs while preserving the industrial park's character.
For example, the grain elevator provided inspiration for both program placement and circulation flow. By reimagining traditional building forms and investigating their potential intersections, we created spaces that provide unexpected experiences, such as moving from a rooftop vista to the intimate confines of a Bessemer machine.
The project depicts the passage of time and the changing seasons of nature, with each character and program representing a different temporal dimension. Specific factory interior forms correspond to different program types, which improves the design's overall coherence.
The intended experiences for visitors include encountering the juxtaposition of old and new, witnessing transformative moments within the landscape, and observing the ecological healing of the industrial site. The site is organized around interconnected systems, which include elements such as water, rails, industry, roads, and plant growth to promote a harmonious relationship between human activity and the environment.
The design encourages exploration through public circulation paths, meandering tunnels, and hidden grottos, shaping visitor movement based on Lantz's concept of time. The building encourages people to engage with the industrial landscape's past, present, and future, thereby creating a rich tapestry of memories for future generations.
