In a time of on-demand media and increasingly affordable home theater technology how does the local cinema stay relevant? The function of a cinema distills down to a simple program: a dark room filled with strangers sharing a powerful communal experience. It is the communal arrangement that will ultimately perpetuate the industry.
Still, the overall experience should be brought into scrutiny. Once the movie begins we are effectively transported to alternate worlds. But what sort of world were we occupying upon entering the lobby? While walking down the hallway? Making the necessary restroom visit? These somewhat mundane programmatic requirements are where current theaters miss an opportunity to create a fully encompassing, designed experience.
This proposal leverages the addition of museum-grade exhibits and a secondary bar gathering space to increase the cultural relevance of the theater-going event.
