The program was a retail shoroom for the funiture brand Vitra to be set on the ground floor of 200 West 2nd street in downtown Austin, at the northwest corner of West 2nd and Colorado. Taking cues from the booth design the showrrom design has a similar formal language as well as flooring applicaions and overhead conditions to define space. The facet loosely defines the space overhead and also becomes the railing for the mezannine which is defined by the same datum line as the header. From the facet, planes extend to the ground to more firmly define the space and create areas for display, define your views, and dictate the circulation through the space. The overhead canopy and mezannine define the space more rigorously by creating more intimate areas within the larger space. Finally, the flooring indicates space as well as furniture placement and creates various thresholds throughout the showroom.
My showroom is playful, fun and forward thinking just like Vitra. The company has high aspirations of acheiving new levels in design and rngineering. Vitra produces furniture that is both timeless and modern and is a company that looks to change as the world does. My design follows these characteristics from the bright green flooring to the complex, angular geometry of the form.
